Making A Model Student
January 31, 2018
Here at PVHS, competitive academics and athletics have students striving to meet the expectations of their teachers, parents, and peers. But what features really make up the ideal student? Every teacher has a slightly different preference of specific student characteristics in which they desire, but the base line is relatively consistent. One aspect of this base line is setting personal goals and displaying the drive and willingness to go above and beyond. With endless ways to set oneself away from the crowd, many teachers acknowledge independence as an important trait. Independence also expresses originality as this shows teachers that students can follow their own paths. Here are a few specific traits, from teachers here at PVHS, that really make a good student.
Laura Palosaari, member of the math department, as well as computer science teacher, expects “Positivity, helpfulness, and following directions explicitly” from her students. Palosaari specifically described the ideal student as being obedient, respectful, and selfless. Students who attempt to add positivity to the learning environment standout as outgoing and passionate individuals.
Teachers only want the best for their students but sometimes difficult tasks are taken in a negative light by students. Many teachers push students to reach their full potential and students who willingly accept challenges and stay on task consistently stand out.
Communication is a necessary component student/teacher interactions. Bad communication alone coveys a lacking persistency, minimal effort and perceived disrespectfulness.
Joe Pinkelman, a veteran teacher from Palos Verdes High School’s art department, explained that “Communication is key. Effective communication is a requirement of being a responsible student and mature individual.”
A common problem with many of our students here at PV High is the usage of cellphones during classroom lecture. While texting, playing phone games, and using snapchat may all seem like better alternatives to taking notes, your teachers will remember those students who were locked into their teaching lesson rather than a phone screen at an inappropriate time.
It is clear that all teachers demand a certain level of respect. Building solid relationships with teachers is crucial to success and stability in a learning environment.
