Often described as one of the most difficult sports for its high-intensity and endurance, rowing is something few people would take on. Senior Dylan Jacob is one of those few people.
Jacob started her rowing journey six years ago, after her parents decided to enroll her in a crew program.
“I really wasn’t expecting to do it for this long. I kind of just thought ‘Oh, let’s try it and see, I’m probably never gonna do this in college.’ And then I just kept doing it over the years and I ended up falling in love with the sport,” Jacob said.
Jacob is part of Marina Aquatic Center Rowing, a UCLA-affiliated crew team.
Practices are daily, typically lasting three hours, and can start as early as 5:45 AM on weekends.
Although many would be off-put by this kind of dedication, Jacob welcomes the challenge.
“I think because I started at such a young age, I’ve kind of grown up to discipline myself. I’ve just been so used to it.”
Jacob’s rowing career has led her to many places, including the University of Cambridge.
“It’s given me opportunities to travel and meet people all over the place, I’ve really made some of my best friends on the team, and they really feel like family.”
Progress has not gone unnoticed by those who are closest to her.
Jacob’s hard work has paid off, as she has committed to Fordham University as a recruit to the school’s D1 rowing team.
“It’s very inspiring watching someone work so hard. Knowing how much time and effort she puts into rowing as a sport, it makes me feel so inspired,” said sister Drew Jacob.
“She’s been doing it for a long time and I’m happy that it’s grown into something that she’s really enjoyed.”
