29 and Strong

PVHS Girls Soccer heads out in full force with 29 players rostered.

So far this season, the team has been going strong, as they sit at the top of Bay League and have just five more matches left.

In league, the team is undefeated with four wins and one tie.

“With 25 matches being played in the span of eight to nine weeks, that puts a lot of physical and emotional stress on the player, so we carry a lot of players,” Head Coach Sean Lockhart said.

PV’s toughest game was played against reining Bay League Champs, Mira Costa, but the kings battled to have a result of winning 1-0 in OT.

“With cheering support from the 18 players on the bench our 11 starters felt the intensity that we had to play at… our best for the game,” senior Captain Anna Deleon said.

Carrying 29 people on the team has its advantages. For practice, having a large team is an advantage because it gives access to the options of building game situations.

“Training sessions allow us to be thorough for games in how we attack and defend with two full sided teams,” Coach Lockhart said.

There are 17 seniors on the team and about 90% have been with the program since freshman year.

The team will be losing its seniors next year, meaning coaches need to filter in the underclassmen in order to avoid an abrupt change for the team.

“We will definitely miss our seniors but we are looking to step up at the end of season to progress as a team for next year,” junior Mackenzie Shannon said.
