Girls Get New B-Ball Coach
Since the winter sports season has started up, Girls’ Basketball gained a new head coach.
The previous head coach was with the team for five years, but is no longer coaching.
Coach Rick Gwinn, the previous junior varsity coach, was hired to take over the head coaching position.
“He has been in the program for a few years; he has made the transition much easier and has done a great job getting everybody ready,” Brian Shapiro said.
Coach Gwinn stood with the team and has stepped up to help them through this time.
“[Coach Gwinn] has helped with our attitudes, and our confidence has increased and improved because he is more encouraging,” senior and captain Kelli Takahashi said.
With the coaching change, new energy and attitude has been brought to the team. The change in these aspects has helped the team with their overall playing.
This year there is only one team so the varsity team is filled with students that vary from freshman to seniors. This shift has created a tight bond between the girls.
“Everyone was there for each other and even through the coaching change, they are all supportive,” captain Mari Shigekawa said.
Although the team has gone through some changes, they have kept close nevertheless.
This season is starting out on a high note as the team recently won the Corona Del Mar tournament.
The tournament was held Monday to Saturday during the week of November 25. This was the third year the team was able to secure the win.
This year, senior captain Shigekawa won the tournament MVP award.
Starting off the season with a bang, the girls now have a winning streak of 4-0.
The team looks forward to a great season alongside their newfound coach and strong team.
