A Sailor’s Life for Grant Coors
Grant Coors began sailing as a freshman and has continued to pursue his passion for it up until his senior year. Originally, he did not know which sport he would pursue in high school.
“Eventually I decided on sailing because of the students in it and the added benefit of not having P.E,” said Coors.
Sailing helped Grant meet new people and also allow him to see new places.
Coors said, “I love traveling to different places to compete with the team because it’s exciting to achieve accomplishments as a group.”
Last year, Grant participated in the 2018 Gaucho Regatta, a sailing competition, in Santa Barbara with his skipper, who steers the boat, Gavin McJones.
However, on the first day of the two-day regatta, Gavin was taking an ACT, so Grant had to drive the boat himself against a tough fleet.
Grant got second to last place but felt proud that he skippered the boat himself.
“Gavin usually drives the boat so I was nervous to drive the boat myself,” said Coors, “But I was prepared for the situation and handled it perfectly.”
On the second day of the race, however, Gavin was there to skipper.
Grant was back in his normal position crewing, and they got first place in the race.
This year Grant is going to again do the whole Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association series which includes five regattas along the West Coast.
It concludes with a qualifier regatta which if the team does well enough, could qualify for Nationals which would allow them to compete with teams all over the country.
In his free time, Grant enjoys eating good food and especially enjoys spicy food.
He also enjoys investing in Bitconnect and wishes to pursue a career related to it.
In terms of schoolwork, Grant handles his large workload well because of the minimal practices that the sailing team has.
Grant values the nice things in life and can’t commit all his hours to sail. But his passion remains and sailing will forever be one of his favorite hobbies.
McJones said, “Grant is so invigorated about sailing, and I am looking forward to finishing the series this year with him.”
