Every week seakings look forward to one thing, and they’re not Fridays – they are late starts. Every Wednesday, we have been fortunate enough to come to school an hour and a half later than usual. Having these late starts gives us the opportunity to do many things that we normally couldn’t. We could finish up some homework, have a breakfast that we don’t need to speed eat, and do our favorite, sleep in.
There are the selective few that do not appreciate late starts as much of some of us, mostly teachers. Some of the teachers at PV High claim that there is just not enough time to teach the lesson for any given day when the class period is shortened by a late start. But, we students give teachers our attention every day of the week, so we deserve our break on Wednesdays.
We all have that one page of homework we just cannot finish. Wednesday late starts give us the opportunity to finish the assignment and not get a zero. Late starts are needed to supply that extra time once a week to study and do last minute homework that you forgot about last night. We need these late starts to put forth the best effort we can in school and to do the best we can. Without late starts, our energy levels would probably drop, thus causing a decline in grades overall.
If you’ve ever woken up late, you know the feeling of rushing through a bowl of cereal. On Wednesdays, we have the ability to sit down and enjoy wonderfully long breakfasts. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Research shows that children who have breakfast perform better on cognitive tests in school. Also, livestrong.com reports that “children who eat breakfast participate more in class and have a better handle on complex problems and get better grades.” Let us at least have one day of a good nutritious breakfast.
Lastly, there is nothing better than a good night’s sleep. For me personally, there is truly no amount of sleep that is ever enough, but I look forward to Wednesday because it gives me that extra time to sleep. Sleep is probably most of the reason why we all love late starts, but as mentioned, there are many more benefits.
I want late starts here for good! Coming from experience of waking up late, not finishing homework, and eating breakfast as I sprint out the door. Wednesdays are a huge help to me! It may only be an hour and a half difference, but that’s all it takes. It’s the perfect break in between the week and I enjoy every minute of it!
Whether it’s once a week or once a month, late starts are gonna be here to stay. And we should be happy either way!
