The process of signing up for college courses can be difficult, but signing up for it through PV makes it much easier.
Dual enrollment is the process of signing up for college courses as a high school student. The program is partnered with LA Harbor College and schedules it all through the school.
There are countless courses for students to take through dual enrollment. Dual enrollment moderator, Monica Hamilton said,
“Dual enrollment gives students the opportunity to take different types of courses that aren’t offered in the school curriculum.”
Dual enrollment gives students the chance to gain knowledge about other career paths that aren’t open to them the regular classes offered in high school.
“Students are being exposed to college level coursework, then you’re more likely to take another college class and eventually get your AA degree, your associate’s degree or your bachelors degree,” Hamilton said.
This year the AVID classes have the opportunity to take these classes. There are four different programs that are being offered for AVID: Comm 101-Public Speaking, Counseling 17-College surviving skills development, Counseling 4-Career planning and College 101- Navigating your path through college and career.
AVID coordinator Cari Secrist said, “The focus of AVID is to do college prep work, and actually having the students get the opportunity to work with a college professor on college level work.”
This opens the door for students that want to get a head start on their college life.
One of the students who has taken multiple classes through the program is junior Chimi Nwude who has taken three classes through dual enrollment. Nwude said, “ I took dual enrollment classes to guarantee college credits and to better prepare myself for college curriculum.”
There are not many resources at most schools that pave the way for students setting out for a successful college experience. The drive for most students is there, but the resources aren’t all of the time.
“I’m so glad that it made its way to AVID,” Nwude said, “AVID is such a great resource but…getting that advice from an actual college makes it really beneficial.”
