Halloween has come and gone, but the scariest day of the year has yet to come. Black Friday quickly approaches us all, falling on November 28th this year. Soon Walmarts and shopping centers all over the country will be filled with chaos and disorder. With seven reported deaths and ninety injuries reported last Black Friday, it can definitely be considered dangerous to attempt retail on this day. Following the day we give thanks for what we have, Thanksgiving, we scavenge the mall hunting for what we want. Personally, I choose pumpkin pie over being shanked at Del Amo Fashion Center, but those who want a good deal will sacrifice an arm and a leg for a Best Buy bargain. But is it worth the risk? Sea Kings share their most horrifying black Friday tales in the spirit of the day-after-holiday.
Broken Glass and Broken Hearts
Sophomore, Alison Millman, experienced pure terror through the form of teen angst at Del Amo’s number one source for hipster goods, Urban Outfitters. It was before opening, late on Thanksgiving night; waiting in line was painful, but the fear that someone might get the last ironic t-shirt before she could dominated. Customers in line in front of Millman were reckless, and could not take one more minute without a polaroid camera. A “crazy teenage girl” filled with hormones broke the glass window to the Gateway of indie heaven. And with the broken glass, came broken hearts, for the store was then closed for the day. Customers waiting in line stood frustrated while Millman simply “thought it was funny”.
K-9 for TV
You may have watched some horror movie during October that included sacrifice. Senior, Delaney Mazen, witnessed a different type of sacrifice during her Black Friday adventures. It was the day after Thanksgiving and all through Walmart, all the shoppers were stirring, each pushing a cart. It might have been the stress of shopping that caused this madness but what Delaney saw next was something truly frightening. Why, it was a woman, a confused woman, trying to exchange her dog for a TV. While Walmart is not an abnormal place to find interesting people, it was a strange experience. All Delaney Mazen had to comment was, “I wish I had thought of it first”.
Red Friday
Senior, Ellie O’Hern woke up bright and early to experience Black Friday the way most people wouldn’t want to. She and her father woke up at four in the morning and drove all the way to Santa Monica to find some sales. Walking down the streets, she encountered something of great shock and horror. There was “a giant blood stain” on the cement and that alone caused them worry. They quickly heard that someone had been pushed into the window because of Black Friday chaos. The Father Daughter day shopping quickly turned the rest of the day into one full of worry and paranoia.
So, as you prepare for the most horrifying day of the year, keep in mind the terror that can come with a shopping trip. As shown, an innocent outing to go buy a new tv, or some cute new outfits could easily turn into a large fiasco when you walk into the Twilight Zone that is Black Friday. Good luck Sea Kings, I hope all your nightmares don’t become a reality this Black Friday.
