With the fog starting to roll in and the days getting cooler, Palos Verdes students are trading in the crop tops and frayed high waited shorts and adjusting to fall fashion. This year’s fall fashion brings us a mix of bright colors, cozy fabrics, and statement accessories. All in all, it seems that the most common themes for back to school are comfort and warmth.
For the ladies, flat boots of all kinds are in full force, as well as detailed slip-ons and stylish sneakers. Combat styles, Doc Martens, and riding boots are popular, featuring a twist of lace and lots of leather, and can be worn with jeans, dresses, or basically any outfit. Cat-faced flats, oxfords, and moccasins are also more comfortable and simple alternatives for everyday wear. For girls and guys alike, basic and printed sneakers like high top and regular Converse and Vans continue to be staples in the wardrobes of many.
For those who are not ready to say goodbye to summer fashion, you can try pairing patterned skirts or dresses with boots for an in-between look.
Junior Nicola Kirkpatrick is a fan of this style. “I love it because it’s easy to put together but still looks cute and comfy. At 6 AM, the last thing I want to do is think about what to wear!” stated Kirkpatrick
Likewise the long skirt is another way to adjust to the changing weather. Neutrals, stripes or bright colors in plain skirts, half-sheer skirts, and skirts with slits can be bought in most clothing stores, such as Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, H&M, and even Target. Definitely these types of skirts work on cooler days, and a big knit sweater can also function well as an easy thrown together look. Students can wear them with leggings, jeans, dresses and skirts to fight the approaching cool weather.
The legging trend finds its biggest appearance in the form of Lululemon, a yoga-based clothing company with a wide array of merchandise. The wunder under full length pants as well as crops are made of luon fabric with a convenient pocket in the waistband. These bottoms come in solids, prints, with patterned waistbands, and even in reversible styles, all of which make the product a hit! The outerwear jackets and tops at Lululemon are also comfortable and great for a relaxed look.
In terms of fabric and patterns, denim, flannel, and camouflage are popping up in the halls of PV. Light or dark washed jean jackets, vests, and shirts can provide a heavy layer to keep you warm and can turn a simple outfit more stylish. Denim dresses and overalls are also trying to push their way into fashion this fall.
These days, flannel is ever present when the temperature drops, so when you need a quick fix in the morning, some jeans or leggings and a cozy plaid flannel are a great option. Lastly, along with combat boots, military style can be seen in camouflage appearing on anything from leggings and backpacks to jackets and jeans.
For those days where you’re running late, a few simple accessories can save a haphazardly thrown together ensemble. Knit, infinity, and cotton scarves will warm your neck this fall and tribal or animal prints can add a touch of your personality to basic outfits. The watch has also become more than just a time-telling device, appearing on the wrists of both genders. Whether traditional clock-faced or digital, this season’s watches come in many colors and wristband designs for all tastes. This useful statement may even save you from being late to class!
As far as hair accessories, bows and headbands can add small touches of detail and show individuality. Whether small or large, the hair bow can be styled in neutral colors, floral or tribal prints, and even polka dots or studs for a girly look. The headbands for fall also come in many varieties like lace with pearl accents, black with gold studs, flower arrangements, and even cat ears.
The elastic tie wristband is also keeping its place on the wrists of many since its rise in popularity this past year. Lastly, the trends for hats this year seem to be similar for both genders, with the snapback and beanie both popular. These hats come from a range of stores like Lids, Brandy Melville, and Urban Outfitters and can display themes of anything from sports team logo to messages like “stay weird.”
Whatever a person’s style, the most important part of fashion is the individual. No matter the latest trend, or hottest stores, clothes are about expressing one’s personality, so this fall, you can use these bright new looks to shine through the fog.
